A very wide age range
I am often asked what the age range for my stories is: what is the appropriate age for children who might be interested in my books? While the typical answer might be something generic like ages 4-8, the truth may, in fact, be much broader.
Why? Because adults read picture books to children. Take Brooke and Wren, for example, who are both younger than two years old and ask that my book Girls Aren’t Just Girly be read to them over and over again – sometimes 10 or more times in one sitting! On the other end of the spectrum are Betty and Reneé – great grandmothers aged 91 and 92. Renee, also known as Memmé, has read my book If I Were King of the Kitchen with the same animation and enthusiasm as a preschool teacher.
This calibration leads me to embrace that the ages my books would appeal to range broadly from 15 months to 92 years. And why not! That is the beauty of children’s books. They lend themselves to being read over and over again. And if an author like me is lucky enough, for generations.
